Wow, what a milestone! All those years ago, when I made my very first quilt, did I have any idea of how this first step would impact my future? Not a clue LOL. Ever since then, quilting has become a bigger and more important part of my life and has led to opportunities I never dreamed of having.<br />
<br />
I have been musing everything that brought me to this point, all of the things I've done in the past that made today possible. I'd like to share a bit about how I got to be where I am now.<br />
<br />
Truthfully, it all started when I was a kid in elementary school. I loved to read the Little House on the Prairie series of books. I'd read through them all, then go back to the beginning and start again. I was fascinated with the description of how the women would sew everything by hand, making sure their stitches were small and consistent. I wanted to see if I could do that too.<br />
<br />
So, I played with needle and thread, and some of my mom's scraps. I also learned in Girl Scouts how to make camping supplies out of wash cloths sewn together. (Anyone remember "dunk bags"?) And over time, I succeeded in making my stitches small and even. I made some bags in which I could carry things. In fact, I still have two of them!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfuE_6fQeposNQbd3zz726ru-nu3qqlTn14ek5zk_hspnStlrEkQpLKG0EpF729NMe8mTytx7U0KPt9O2_-iQTZ8S-ye8LxGru0Q5fQHPPIn4gF26Popl_A_oOf88SwPcVWZw9o1GHfqmB/s1600/HandStitching_TwoBags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfuE_6fQeposNQbd3zz726ru-nu3qqlTn14ek5zk_hspnStlrEkQpLKG0EpF729NMe8mTytx7U0KPt9O2_-iQTZ8S-ye8LxGru0Q5fQHPPIn4gF26Popl_A_oOf88SwPcVWZw9o1GHfqmB/s400/HandStitching_TwoBags.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, they are simple drawstring bags. And yes, they need a good trip through the washing machine LOL. But looking inside one of them, you can see just how my hand sewing skills had grown.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9BJeQO9wb8ZCX9GEOPdqV__CMV1gytRiCqH_XQ95wdcH3xTjzzTmMfoaKtGa8CPH4rqeE1JVIoEL2mZXtQOhQoYHkPHt1FaGSgCcBUztxMc6UkUElE0TPktqf_wvwczCfw_DbmpyMeu8l/s1600/HandStitching_Detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1008" data-original-width="756" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9BJeQO9wb8ZCX9GEOPdqV__CMV1gytRiCqH_XQ95wdcH3xTjzzTmMfoaKtGa8CPH4rqeE1JVIoEL2mZXtQOhQoYHkPHt1FaGSgCcBUztxMc6UkUElE0TPktqf_wvwczCfw_DbmpyMeu8l/s400/HandStitching_Detail.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I had forgotten about all those features. Blanket stitch on the bottom to stop fraying! French seam along the side! All the raw edges folded inside the drawstring housing. And those teeny stitches holding it all in place. No wonder it hasn't fallen apart yet.<br />
<br />
(On a side note, I also loved reading about how the Ingalls family got their first treadle sewing machine. It is still a bucket list item for me to learn how to sew on one.)<br />
<br />
I also remember a very important lesson learned by simple trial and error. I wanted to make a dress-up skirt for myself. With my mom's blessing, I used an old sheet and her Kenmore sewing machine. I measured my waist, and cut the waistband that size. I measured how long I wanted the skirt to be, and cut the pieces that size. Then I sewed everything together... and it was too small! I forgot to add in a seam allowance. Obviously that lesson has stuck with me after all these years.<br />
<br />
All those early lessons, those early failures, helped me to grow and gave me a starting point on my quilting journey. Did I still have a lot to learn? Heck yeah! I had to learn about a scant quarter inch seam allowance to ensure everything turned out the right size. I had to learn about color play, pattern designing, tips and tricks on working with bias edges, and so forth.<br />
<br />
So, what does it look like when a quilter celebrates 20 years of quilting? My quilts went from this (my first quilt ever made, finished on January 15, 1999):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
12 years ago I decided to start a quilting business. I offer quilting services to other quilters who make tops but can't (or don't want to) do the quilting themselves. I also make quilts to order. And let me say, some of those client quilts made me grow as a quilter as well. The ideas people come up with amaze me!<br />
<br />
Just recently, all this sewing and quilting expertise has segued into something completely new: auto upholstery! With quilting, I knew the materials and the techniques. It was comfortable, it was safe. I'm in a whole new world now! New materials with new properties, new pattern making techniques, new pitfalls, new rewards. And 3D shapes to be dealt with! And yet, the one aspect that makes for "high end interiors" - the diamond quilting on the leather - is the easy part. LOL!<br />
<br />
I think I'm off to a good start.<br />

The future is exciting! Who knows what will develop in the next month, year, decade. I can't wait to see what is to come.<br />
<br />
What about you? What has your journey (quilting or otherwise) looked like? What were some of the early lessons you learned that have stuck with you through the years?<br />

I would pick recipes to make for the week, I'd shop for those recipes, but always I'd either forget what I had planned, or I would decide that I didn't really want to make what I had planned, or something would happen that would have me fall off the wagon halfway through the week. I'd end up with ingredients going bad and being thrown away, wasting food and money.<br />
<br />
Earlier this month, though, I decided I was tired of getting to dinner time and not knowing what I was going to cook that night, having no flash of inspiration, or missing ingredients if I did actually come up with an idea of what I wanted to cook. I decided I needed to come up with a system that would actually help me to plan meals... and stick to the plan.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">My solution: Refrigerator Magnet Meal Planning!!</span></div>
<br />
I have the week's menu, including entrée and side dishes, all lined up on the front of the fridge. This makes it easy to see at a glance what meal is planned for what day. I have my week starting on Wednesday, as this is the day I do my grocery shopping.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRhVXnQ767hd3alAPpv3n2gcCFi24q2KdCCO1VQ82d_6reOdXLZYT9gCy_dN9UZncpPjJq1iV2jJu1kOeV6eEU8F-YVDsyW-uTvbVkHs1HkjPoCHr9QUIRvloTToTb1JCbvCbze4ODu3av/s1600/MealPlanning1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRhVXnQ767hd3alAPpv3n2gcCFi24q2KdCCO1VQ82d_6reOdXLZYT9gCy_dN9UZncpPjJq1iV2jJu1kOeV6eEU8F-YVDsyW-uTvbVkHs1HkjPoCHr9QUIRvloTToTb1JCbvCbze4ODu3av/s400/MealPlanning1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have many other entrée, side dish, even dessert magnets ready and waiting for when it is time to plan the next week's menu.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvJn2XAufG-ETYttQS3fTvvDT90mWerkLP1QX-j0Ftot2GC8_UPWHtSKttyfJ-WFdko5VuhHWS8TGOWh6vNn9oZZDkw4BM81VyJ2Bmg5md10tHtyBxgS3cXHDsOO5uqT-bq0wy8xrkimeq/s1600/MealPlanning2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvJn2XAufG-ETYttQS3fTvvDT90mWerkLP1QX-j0Ftot2GC8_UPWHtSKttyfJ-WFdko5VuhHWS8TGOWh6vNn9oZZDkw4BM81VyJ2Bmg5md10tHtyBxgS3cXHDsOO5uqT-bq0wy8xrkimeq/s400/MealPlanning2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
(To be honest, this collection of magnets has grown quite a bit since I took this photo. I kept remembering more recipes I had forgotten initially!)<br />
<br />
So, how did I make this? I discovered that you can get printable magnet sheets from Staples. (At the time of this writing, the item number is <span class="stp--fg-gray-3 ng-binding" ng-bind="product.metadata.partnumber">386943, you can search for them on Staples.com.)</span> You can put these sheets through your inkjet printer, or you can write on them yourself. I chose to print mine because I'm a bit OCD and wanted them to look as good as possible LOL.<br />
<br />
With my word processing software, I set up a new document as if to print labels. I used that as my template and filled in all the names of the different dishes I wanted to have available for meal planning. I used different colors for the different categories: Black for the day of the week, Red for entrees, Green for side dishes, Blue for desserts. Not pictured are the ones I added later: Purple for "Leftovers", Light Blue for "fend for yourselves" (for the times I'm not able to cook for the family).<br />
<br />
After printing the documents onto the magnetic sheets and letting them dry overnight, I carefully cut out the magnets along the lines from the label template. I then arranged the magnets on my fridge so that entrées were together, side dishes were together, and desserts were together. This makes is super easy to browse through the options when selecting the next weeks' meals, and my kids can even help with meal planning now.<br />
<br />
I'm heading into week 4 of using this system, and it has really been working for me! Because it's all just magnets, I can rearrange the plan if something comes up, i.e. I don't have 2 hours to cook this chili tonight, but I do tomorrow so let's swap today's and tomorrow's plans. Plus, my family always knows what to expect for dinner. There's something very satisfying in hearing one of my daughters get all excited over what's for dinner. :)<br />
<br />
I hope this information helps you to master your own meal planning, whether you copy my method, modify it to fit your needs, or do something else completely different. Happy planning!!<br />

<br />
The quilt top is finished!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq94dPtYcp7kX4d6o7k9cQROfM4M6x-EDDHWra-peWsGegy01TJ8Mx3BmFjlo0LYHj-szlConUZ8iDucCZyoVf7MwmG9MNIxXqQVHlWqWEiV9-Tkk9HLSjvvHsDJTIhooEaookUexEe947/s1600/AllietoreTopFinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq94dPtYcp7kX4d6o7k9cQROfM4M6x-EDDHWra-peWsGegy01TJ8Mx3BmFjlo0LYHj-szlConUZ8iDucCZyoVf7MwmG9MNIxXqQVHlWqWEiV9-Tkk9HLSjvvHsDJTIhooEaookUexEe947/s400/AllietoreTopFinished.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<br />
It's taken me long enough, don't you think? LOL! Now that the top is done and the binding strips (black) are cut, I just have to piece a backing and get it quilted / bound. That will hopefully happen before Thanksgiving... when the next mystery will start.<br />
<br />
Have you finished your Allietore? If so, hooray for you! If not, maybe your blocks aren't done aging (like a fine wine) so don't worry. It will happen when the time is right. :)<br />

The next clue could be our last... or not. That's part of the mystery, we don't even know how many clues are left. What fun! :)<br />
<br />
Do you want to play along with the Mystery? Go to Bonnie's blog to get all the clues.<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/allietare-mystery.html" target="_blank">Allietare Mystery</a><br />
<br />
Check out all the progress being made by those who are participating! There is some fantastic work being done.<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2015/12/mystery-monday-link-up-part-5.html" target="_blank">Mystery Monday Link-Up, Part 5</a><br />
<br />
So, what have I managed to complete? I worked slowly but surely on getting Clue 5 finished. I was moving a bit slowly because I ended up growing a very nice sinus infection. I went to Urgent Care on December 26th and have some good medicine, so I'm feeling much better now.<br />
<br />
Here are all my units from Clue 5!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfa4u4EJZsS-TxgvbXAvTDJReImV5Ugz-D9JUqI1RgakkO8xY7VWnwCwn4iTNjHPMAUj78nNVuGv4CA6Cg4vlL2W1ISaD4Ex8CMA8073mNjsGisOC2DyaB5qCmdpP9eKfLxTNtLf8M8XcR/s1600/Allietare_Clue5_UnitsFinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfa4u4EJZsS-TxgvbXAvTDJReImV5Ugz-D9JUqI1RgakkO8xY7VWnwCwn4iTNjHPMAUj78nNVuGv4CA6Cg4vlL2W1ISaD4Ex8CMA8073mNjsGisOC2DyaB5qCmdpP9eKfLxTNtLf8M8XcR/s400/Allietare_Clue5_UnitsFinished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My units are not perfect, but they're close enough for me. I'm sure they will work out just fine. :)<br />
<br />
I have also been working on making the sashing for the second Grand Illusion charity quilt. This time I'm using blue in the sashing and the setting squares. I am curious to see how this color change affects the overall look of the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1WSCPZOprRpsmzSgV5bD39S8rvYKcLwjDyvLXXNmnOxHWKpWaZM2_FcpCO31j34ZTRD8yc3fD-9_ewLN0YAXQEqwZamysUupBxS57BBgkatBLT6Aw76KWdWocVpRiFIgl9bt1rV4sRWRq/s1600/Allietare_Clue5_SashingForGI2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1WSCPZOprRpsmzSgV5bD39S8rvYKcLwjDyvLXXNmnOxHWKpWaZM2_FcpCO31j34ZTRD8yc3fD-9_ewLN0YAXQEqwZamysUupBxS57BBgkatBLT6Aw76KWdWocVpRiFIgl9bt1rV4sRWRq/s400/Allietare_Clue5_SashingForGI2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Isn't that blue fabric fun? Batik bubbles. :)<br />
<br />
I hope all of you had a great Christmas and will have a fantastic New Year. Can you believe that the new year is only a day away? Wow, time flies!<br />

Better late than never, right? :)<br />
<br />
For whatever reason, this clue seemed to take a long time. Maybe that's because of all the units we had to make, maybe that's because we're also in the midst of Christmas obligations, maybe both. I finished up late last night (Christmas Eve), so now I can share my progress.<br />
<br />
Want to participate in this mystery too? You can find all of Bonnie's clues on her blog:<br /><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/allietare-mystery.html" target="_blank">Allietare Mystery</a><br />
<br />
Want to see how everyone else is doing on their clues? Check out the Monday Mystery Link-up!<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2015/12/sewing-parties-are-best-kind-of-parties.html" target="_blank">Monday Mystery Link-Up, Part 4!</a><br />
<br />
Here are my pieces all cut out and ready to go. I'm loving my variety of neutrals!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0VUFFIddFfFIjCjVKmJu9DoaaQy3vqSy9H7x7qVSnzbP4-aaPoU-WESWsne2Bo0hDrkPOR_8_FdOdroE5eq6keCfJCMPkHO1hXLyFfWZPs-XCd8nYEbpfpYHNBwo5XGpVH5PnDT7nXxu/s1600/Allietare_Clue4_PiecesCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0VUFFIddFfFIjCjVKmJu9DoaaQy3vqSy9H7x7qVSnzbP4-aaPoU-WESWsne2Bo0hDrkPOR_8_FdOdroE5eq6keCfJCMPkHO1hXLyFfWZPs-XCd8nYEbpfpYHNBwo5XGpVH5PnDT7nXxu/s400/Allietare_Clue4_PiecesCut.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now it's time to assemble! I laid my units out assembly line style, sewing all the pieces for each set together, leaving them chained together until it was time to press. You can see the ones farthest to the right (next to Bonnie, my Featherweight) are waiting to have the first black triangle sewn on. The next ones to the left are waiting to have the second black triangle sewn on. Lastly I have the pairs ready to be sewn together into finished units.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAa2WhgOcXopEM3J82HJ1Uh8CeUoG_1IVGGEescA5PefvMOLnpWeyvvfO8QADbgdnEMACLBqSiywKKtEFXFT_pB-RS7r4mfnBIWPPy4vn8NTGJ0kR2s0C8522m2JmEh85Sh7EbHHLC-m64/s1600/Allietare_Clue4_AssemblyLine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAa2WhgOcXopEM3J82HJ1Uh8CeUoG_1IVGGEescA5PefvMOLnpWeyvvfO8QADbgdnEMACLBqSiywKKtEFXFT_pB-RS7r4mfnBIWPPy4vn8NTGJ0kR2s0C8522m2JmEh85Sh7EbHHLC-m64/s400/Allietare_Clue4_AssemblyLine.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Doing the sewing this way helped to keep boredom at bay. I was able to switch up what I was doing every four sets.<br />
<br />
And here we are, all my units finished! Finally! LOL. I am now ready for Clue #5.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwMUnlylVr_8SaHtkjyXn53wkVAnyghtMRyGLQedbdbnRgvnIqnFBWUFHUyhrv_t9pTNLZtJkBHAwMIB0pl4RN85_yqbUiuFroj3FTK8_ukzL-oo4UK5RImKxcYbOcX_EwCTbcAAbfp_Qa/s1600/Allietare_Clue4_HalfWay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLb8Jk6bbYPB56yyYtjuaAzYca0Y0XxpmnyWfeEXUbVFs3yozNb4iu_G9-dGbPkqzbp8VQe2PiVLt-HtSe0wU19VnlgvJTaw7A6u2VbohrqqJfXYw4GWR6DxgNr4vaEsKle31_Ve38QDnc/s1600/Allietare_Clue4_Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLb8Jk6bbYPB56yyYtjuaAzYca0Y0XxpmnyWfeEXUbVFs3yozNb4iu_G9-dGbPkqzbp8VQe2PiVLt-HtSe0wU19VnlgvJTaw7A6u2VbohrqqJfXYw4GWR6DxgNr4vaEsKle31_Ve38QDnc/s400/Allietare_Clue4_Finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have progress to report on the Grand Illusion reboot. All the blocks are finished, so I started putting them together into tops. My goal was always to turn the blocks into smaller charity quilts, and I used a setting that I had seen someone share on Facebook. I wish I knew who it was so I could give proper credit. She had used yellow and white to create sashing and setting squares, and I liked how it calmed down the blocks so I did the same thing. I like how it turned out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLKIiMJGPN1LZT4NPqRKUHnSDZoejixQz_aX3TsYqgQTAfVY6jFON7GNeHSGlFtzuMj3YiAYZ1NhTcuU41S951FtQ3rfoh9tdG4J6Z1hO0WGIvXs2lBEJfE6618VpsOHOsENBExP3Qw2p9/s1600/Allietare_Clue4_GIYellowTop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLKIiMJGPN1LZT4NPqRKUHnSDZoejixQz_aX3TsYqgQTAfVY6jFON7GNeHSGlFtzuMj3YiAYZ1NhTcuU41S951FtQ3rfoh9tdG4J6Z1hO0WGIvXs2lBEJfE6618VpsOHOsENBExP3Qw2p9/s400/Allietare_Clue4_GIYellowTop.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This used up some of the blocks. I want to make another one of these, using blue in place of the yellow. After that I will have one lone block left over, perhaps I can make a medallion style quilt using the other units that I haven't touched yet. I'll share photos when I get it done.<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas, and Happy Quilting!<br />

It's a big group and would have left us with no room at all LOL. So I worked at home to finish Clue 3.<br />
<br />
Want to play along? You can get all the clues from Bonnie's blog here:<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/allietare-mystery.html" target="_blank">Allietare Mystery</a><br />
<br />
You should also check out the blogs of all the other quilters who are participating in this mystery. Their work is beautiful!<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2015/12/mystery-monday-link-up-part-3.html" target="_blank">Mystery Monday Link-Up, Part 3</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_bbhZpEeHW6jMDm2IPB4cBOKEj5SoN2RUxP7YVJy_mEWPAVqdPha6MIL8lzjQIeJgum2iQC8e_7gKFh6v3Q3vZpDJMvNgQlvnWWyHLMw3XWJswcnEsGM0QyoIQrLEtAO2McPydN_Oumz4/s1600/AllietoreClue3_StripSets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_bbhZpEeHW6jMDm2IPB4cBOKEj5SoN2RUxP7YVJy_mEWPAVqdPha6MIL8lzjQIeJgum2iQC8e_7gKFh6v3Q3vZpDJMvNgQlvnWWyHLMw3XWJswcnEsGM0QyoIQrLEtAO2McPydN_Oumz4/s400/AllietoreClue3_StripSets.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I dug into my stash of neutrals, I dug into my stash of strips for golds, and I cut from gold yardage bought for this mystery, and I came up with enough variety to make my strip sets for the 4-patches we need to make for this clue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyRXqGfqQLDmKLJzmwbkO5y4nWZ99HEZRATWrYFT04gxDEgPIqPvHfRRwpHUy7kMUBpP3ZqlK7fCa-m7vd4IwP2hThTUCy46uJT6uldO-bEPA3F504Lyo9-jCVtP5huQoaSvH6s4G3BtK/s1600/AllietoreClue3_FourPatches.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyRXqGfqQLDmKLJzmwbkO5y4nWZ99HEZRATWrYFT04gxDEgPIqPvHfRRwpHUy7kMUBpP3ZqlK7fCa-m7vd4IwP2hThTUCy46uJT6uldO-bEPA3F504Lyo9-jCVtP5huQoaSvH6s4G3BtK/s400/AllietoreClue3_FourPatches.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here they are, my 4-patches all finished! I'm pleased with how they turned out. There's definitely enough contrast between the gold fabrics and the neutrals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3g1bW-d-U5CPGT8Hp2WEcaPmXV7JouuLQAurUwyary7-AwNt5FIckVRvuWOyz_KmfL5q1wjDVazAewh8R9M_i036tUHGJwwHH7KEMZxxFgrmSZWjhgNmvh9jUbraT5yQTYhCkIm8NM_Dk/s1600/AllietoreClue3_ExtraPieces.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3g1bW-d-U5CPGT8Hp2WEcaPmXV7JouuLQAurUwyary7-AwNt5FIckVRvuWOyz_KmfL5q1wjDVazAewh8R9M_i036tUHGJwwHH7KEMZxxFgrmSZWjhgNmvh9jUbraT5yQTYhCkIm8NM_Dk/s400/AllietoreClue3_ExtraPieces.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I got the extra pieces cut out too, so they are ready to go whenever Bonnie says they are needed.<br />
<br />
I'm still working on the units from Grand Illusion as my Leaders and Enders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNl2M1H9eXWYh389oifKKQGkQ7pstJyZXnT60MFkvRu21ltKmvwmdNe-avPJ4G45Lsy0u3tOlJqJ8ZcNvHoc-bAWDbKBbzEyHU9VjazP9Waz1-MoPTTPSQ_3Gf68wdpMEfF3jwqdTeDUf_/s1600/AllietoreClue3_LeadersEnders.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNl2M1H9eXWYh389oifKKQGkQ7pstJyZXnT60MFkvRu21ltKmvwmdNe-avPJ4G45Lsy0u3tOlJqJ8ZcNvHoc-bAWDbKBbzEyHU9VjazP9Waz1-MoPTTPSQ_3Gf68wdpMEfF3jwqdTeDUf_/s400/AllietoreClue3_LeadersEnders.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here you go, all my Grand Illusion blocks are finished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAwJTQNNPfF38EEiLknDe6NtFB-wDTfLV6xtBczbnXYGXJ5GQtBBIxBPZMHuw0Ab8VYnsVWNWDV6inUtRyfWIP1k2YhK35-1H8lDw1oomyDdRg4mKL6inz5xVV8JbAC-AWnR-bogWmTJcT/s1600/AllietoreClue3_GIBlocksDone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAwJTQNNPfF38EEiLknDe6NtFB-wDTfLV6xtBczbnXYGXJ5GQtBBIxBPZMHuw0Ab8VYnsVWNWDV6inUtRyfWIP1k2YhK35-1H8lDw1oomyDdRg4mKL6inz5xVV8JbAC-AWnR-bogWmTJcT/s400/AllietoreClue3_GIBlocksDone.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was always my goal to use these blocks, and the other Grand Illusion units, to make 2-3 charity quilts. I've been collecting images of various settings that others have created for their quilts, these will help me decide how to proceed with my charity quilts.<br />
<br />
As you may know, I've been using my 1947 Featherweight to sew these clues and the GI blocks. I got it from a local lady who buys and restores these machines, so it doesn't have any history with my family. I hadn't named her, but lately I've been feeling the need to name her. I Googled popular names from 1947, and with the help of my children we've decided that her name should be Bonnie. I think it's fitting, don't you? :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I hope you're making progress on your Allietare units!<br />

Want to play along? You can get all the information for this mystery at Bonnie's blog:<br />

<br />
I got to the quilt shop, only to find that I was the only one of our quilt group who could make it. One other stopped by while out doing other things, unfortunately she was feeling under the weather. I hope she feels better soon!<br />
<br />
The quilt shop is open for 5 hours on Sundays, and I put that time to good use! While sewing together the units for this week's clue, I also continued using the pieces from last year's mystery, Grand Illusion, as leaders and enders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh5UX-aHRGSrfSzAvhKbznGBgizYTLjFtmLvZAzqu_sCIg-OC9dZudaFmp2lnNuqqQNkNk9wvKJnfAk_tzgvley1gbf3QAlUYqTSNoE4gz91fK3DAXA_DPjQKs-RSm1f03OtrlCMJq_6lw/s1600/Allietare_Clue2_InProgress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh5UX-aHRGSrfSzAvhKbznGBgizYTLjFtmLvZAzqu_sCIg-OC9dZudaFmp2lnNuqqQNkNk9wvKJnfAk_tzgvley1gbf3QAlUYqTSNoE4gz91fK3DAXA_DPjQKs-RSm1f03OtrlCMJq_6lw/s400/Allietare_Clue2_InProgress.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is some of my work in progress, with my Featherweight getting a good workout.<br />
<br />
In the time I had at the quilt shop, I got all the units for this clue sewn and pressed, hooray!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0IQ-lOONW6G5oLFjC6MBE9m6lZgcG_TuhcZ8HDwd416voVD8a_yLt2-P409_Iogje5HPy5QKgJgDIh4O1mQMzMDK8pScV738PuGkluIwxYHNoaTA5OY9N_eZdSCQ7QulU_Rqd2RRODY2o/s1600/Allietare_Clue2_PiecingDone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0IQ-lOONW6G5oLFjC6MBE9m6lZgcG_TuhcZ8HDwd416voVD8a_yLt2-P409_Iogje5HPy5QKgJgDIh4O1mQMzMDK8pScV738PuGkluIwxYHNoaTA5OY9N_eZdSCQ7QulU_Rqd2RRODY2o/s400/Allietare_Clue2_PiecingDone.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also managed to make excellent progress on assembling the Grand Illusion units. Next week the block will be taking shape!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKq0jLYDUextGdM-YYikT_usxbBRIcZF8IALtu6mnNeG50MmHUSIaxyibBW-mwchYN_ix8Xl6pueqHAA4SknpnoFJ-rRMp72EKW03AsPGFqExjNS4UmToQcXcu2gpu-lr2P1VwqleSNAuS/s1600/Allietare_Clue2_LeadersEnders.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKq0jLYDUextGdM-YYikT_usxbBRIcZF8IALtu6mnNeG50MmHUSIaxyibBW-mwchYN_ix8Xl6pueqHAA4SknpnoFJ-rRMp72EKW03AsPGFqExjNS4UmToQcXcu2gpu-lr2P1VwqleSNAuS/s400/Allietare_Clue2_LeadersEnders.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have ready the extra pieces that Bonnie said to cut.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I'm so thankful for the time at the quilt shop. It was distraction free time, which allowed me to get these units finished so I can focus on other projects the rest of the week.<br />
<br />
How are all of you doing? Do you have Christmas gifts to finish up? I have some commissions to finish and other quilt tops to get quilted, but I should be able to get them all done in time for their deadlines. I just have to focus until Clue #3 is released LOL.<br />

Want to play along? Go to Bonnie's blog for all the information. Here's the link:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/allietare-mystery.html" target="_blank">Allietare Mystery</a><br />
<br />
I got together with some new quilting friends today at <a href="http://www.sharonsatticquiltshop.com/" target="_blank">Sharon's Attic Quilt Shop</a> to work on Clue #1 of the mystery. It was nice to get out of my house and away from the usual distractions. This is the only reason why I was able to finish sewing all the units for Clue #1 and get 2/3 of them pressed before I had to head for home.<br /><br />Another interesting fact is that I'm using my 1947 Featherweight to sew this Mystery. I don't use this machine nearly as often as I should, because I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'll have to promise myself to bring her out to play!<br />
<br />
I am using Bonnie's colors this time around, so I don't feel the need to share a photo of all my fabrics. Look at Bonnie's Intro and you'll know the colors of my fabrics LOL.<br />
<br />
But look! I finished pressing all the units when I got home tonight, and have all my units stored away, ready to be used at a later date. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAihsOwEcpUxByykKjR5Id-aTDCFW9gkDgomoov5fhewyMCMmIIaHb9I_yoy3_B_3rxzV3xqAzakabG_KY2kdya1ZDbntFa351V1vKbG26MG8YBcYSHTHMLG8NHbDz24oXVugZ6zMdTKBr/s1600/Allietore_Clue1Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAihsOwEcpUxByykKjR5Id-aTDCFW9gkDgomoov5fhewyMCMmIIaHb9I_yoy3_B_3rxzV3xqAzakabG_KY2kdya1ZDbntFa351V1vKbG26MG8YBcYSHTHMLG8NHbDz24oXVugZ6zMdTKBr/s400/Allietore_Clue1Finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here they are, all of my HST completed. I love the grey that I found, it's technically a Christmas fabric but I love the print and the little touch of red. I think that will work well with the rest of the fabrics, especially since one of Bonnie's other colors is red.<br />
<br />
I am also working on assembling last year's mystery, Grand Illusion. At that time, I worked on it clue by clue until I had all the units finished, but then life happened at the same time as the big reveal and I had to set it aside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEDGlRozi5d3csEqPJw87PAcyXqg5WmdYdspHhVhM0XCez41mMwkhOP7_owAlNGLnZMx1jpKfz9bOKFRN-FYEw8VA8H5jgcVbhKs-WYF8DqpscYgMjAfm8h3bz9L7AQqRy8dBnAsD7UUqK/s1600/LeaderEnder2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEDGlRozi5d3csEqPJw87PAcyXqg5WmdYdspHhVhM0XCez41mMwkhOP7_owAlNGLnZMx1jpKfz9bOKFRN-FYEw8VA8H5jgcVbhKs-WYF8DqpscYgMjAfm8h3bz9L7AQqRy8dBnAsD7UUqK/s400/LeaderEnder2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are all my units, patiently waiting in a bin.<br />
<br />
Now I'm assembling the blocks as Leaders & Enders, and I got a lot done! I look forward to making more progress on them next week when I work on Allietore Clue #2. :)<br />

Hooray! And true to Bonnie's word, this one was super easy. I started working on it at 8:00 am, and finished by 9:30 am. No, I wasn't racing to get it finished, it just was truly this easy.<br />
<br />
You can download the clue from the Quiltville blog until sometime in March 2014 (yes, this is new!), at which point it will be retired so it can be published as a pattern you can purchase. If you're even thinking of working on this quilt, download the clues and save them... or else you'll have to wait until you can purchase a copy later.<br />
<br /><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/grand-illusion-mystery.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #336699;">Grand Illusion Mystery</span></a><br /><br />Every Monday after a clue is posted, Bonnie has a Mystery Link-Up where participants can share photos of their progress, like I've done in this blog. Be sure to check it out and see all the wonderful variations in color and fabric!<br /><br /><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2014/12/mystery-monday-link-up-part-5.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #336699;">Mystery Monday Link-Up, Part 5</span></a><br />
<br />
We had to make some easy four-patch units for this clue. Most of them are aqua (blue) and yellow, while a few are a combination of yellow/black/pink (purple). I've switched my colors up a bit from Bonnie's, with my color choices indicated in parenthesis.<br />
<br />
I'm down to only four of my blue prints, and one of them was mostly used up in this clue. So, to try to get more variety I kept my strip sets short, using the measurement Bonnie suggested. Here are my strip sets, sewn and ready to be paired:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhznl96XWLjK5cHdpU5Cr8ka69ArWZV-wdApebhrhqCmDpSx8oMvEC87Ko8PEEdhENvlHnkQL6Eedz96BDqoR9v8r5Q-f_3rjIuwDo2L_BZ4v4K50_La1YKnfH3tWUwu9Ul8ZvThNCGKxvP/s1600/GI_Clue5_StripSets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhznl96XWLjK5cHdpU5Cr8ka69ArWZV-wdApebhrhqCmDpSx8oMvEC87Ko8PEEdhENvlHnkQL6Eedz96BDqoR9v8r5Q-f_3rjIuwDo2L_BZ4v4K50_La1YKnfH3tWUwu9Ul8ZvThNCGKxvP/s1600/GI_Clue5_StripSets.jpg" height="282" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I was able to get six unique pairing combinations from these strip sets, so I have a bit of variety in my finished four-patch units.<br />
<br />
I didn't have extra black, purple, and yellow pieces left over from previous clues, so I had to cut a few of those. I only cut from two different blacks and two different purples, but that's OK. I don't mind if they aren't as scrappy as the rest of the quilt. It's my quilt after all, I can choose to do that if I want LOL.<br />
<br />
Here are all my finished units for Clue 5:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas Day yesterday, and if you celebrate it, that you have a fun Boxing Day today. May your heart be full of happiness, and may your soul smile... much like my kids were smiling yesterday. (Yes, I had to sneak in a picture of my girls LOL.)<br />

We used pieces from a previous clue, cut some more pieces, and had to sew only a few more units (in Bonnie terms) to complete this clue. I surprised even myself and got it done in a day!<br />
<br />

<br />
This clue started us out with the extra HST that we made in Clue #1. We had to make as many more HST using white and aqua (though if you recall, I swapped blue for the aqua). We also had to cut out some black squares and some yellow squares.<br />
<br />
Here are all my pieces, ready for sewing to begin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjewtQmALX-rv2L3x9qMSwFDsA9djdz3GlKJZrMazISer7VVLI3zuD0CHlK4co7KwqOZKAcRM0EURevif6P6KOgPnU6M-XBgcMd5M7qhHrFIioVhVkn_KV5X8-e7XU-tDLRgTSKs6RPsExN/s1600/GI_Clue4_PiecesParts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjewtQmALX-rv2L3x9qMSwFDsA9djdz3GlKJZrMazISer7VVLI3zuD0CHlK4co7KwqOZKAcRM0EURevif6P6KOgPnU6M-XBgcMd5M7qhHrFIioVhVkn_KV5X8-e7XU-tDLRgTSKs6RPsExN/s1600/GI_Clue4_PiecesParts.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There are my HST triangles, already paired up and ready to sew. I have to admit, at the start of this project I was a little annoyed at the idea of pairing up your fabric strips before cutting with the Easy Angle ruler for the HST units. But now I'm a complete convert! Yes, there is a little extra work to be done to get the strips lined up sufficiently, and yes you end up cutting only one pair at a time, but once you get these pre-matched units to the sewing machine, you FLY through them.<br />
<br />
After flying through sewing the HSTs, I kept on sewing and paired up the blue/purple units from Clue #1 with black or yellow, depending on which block they were destined for. When I was done with that... I had a whole lot of pressing to do LOL.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsN3t6AShyphenhyphen_S5-OvBmqkViotRHSIYQ7TfhydJOhDn6Xr1RQes2l_enpMYOPRSeNPtXkEEVHhrij4vVgeWjKaiGp3fwFDO8aas6dXDsYWbEWyaeLstXOeEk7nKOs4RIpzX7Yk-l_i1tfH7x/s1600/GI_Clue4_LotsToIron.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsN3t6AShyphenhyphen_S5-OvBmqkViotRHSIYQ7TfhydJOhDn6Xr1RQes2l_enpMYOPRSeNPtXkEEVHhrij4vVgeWjKaiGp3fwFDO8aas6dXDsYWbEWyaeLstXOeEk7nKOs4RIpzX7Yk-l_i1tfH7x/s1600/GI_Clue4_LotsToIron.jpg" height="275" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't take long to catch up with the pressing and to continue sewing pieces together until all the blocks were finished. I have all my Broken Dishes #2 finished:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPnGeIWldT8egbJxkSEOOmaUXCJxcFU2M8QqkW-M7vHs5B7EeoOm0tFh9pURXA7DgXRCXiZRRsJt2SGKkK8AULZncDjTHTTOET5BIF75I4h8k9resHM-52vYI05Q2Q13OICw6P4JgZ4-zH/s1600/GI_Clue4_BrokenDishes2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPnGeIWldT8egbJxkSEOOmaUXCJxcFU2M8QqkW-M7vHs5B7EeoOm0tFh9pURXA7DgXRCXiZRRsJt2SGKkK8AULZncDjTHTTOET5BIF75I4h8k9resHM-52vYI05Q2Q13OICw6P4JgZ4-zH/s1600/GI_Clue4_BrokenDishes2.jpg" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As well as all my Broken Dishes #3:<br />
<br />

<br />
Woot! I'm thrilled to have these done! I recently picked up a commission project, so I allowed myself today to play... and play I did. Tomorrow I have to go back to working on the commission. Grand Illusion is my motivation to keep on top of this commission... if I get enough work done on it through the week, then I can take Fridays off to play LOL.<br />
<br />
Until next week....<br />

Strip piecing! Simple units! Yes, we still had to make a ton of them but strip piecing is so easy and so quick, I didn't mind at all. :)<br />
<br />

<br />
Every Monday after a clue is posted, Bonnie has a Mystery Link-Up where participants can share photos of their progress, like I've done in this blog. Be sure to check it out and see all the wonderful variations in color and fabric!<br />

<br />
Friday happened to be a busy day for me, I was able to download the clue and read it while I ate breakfast but I couldn't do much with it until later in the day. I did manage to find the time to cut out my strips later in the evening. I only had four green prints set aside for this mystery but felt that they would be too boring all on their own for this clue LOL. I dug into my stash and found a few more, not quite in the lime green I had started with but they played nicely together so I added them to the pile. Here are my strips, cut and ready to be sewn together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiRjkLqXuGnwhVh_UUmRKpTetaYBdaBSymzo4dkpPv4H5-S4L60TA3ZPwlgDRwg-CgwZgQVJ6h_aheMvFyqzH5DldYcqxNHoXYzPtES3TKD6pvK1ZoW7JVbwhE6jNC7WdNy_Jxm9cRYU3T/s1600/GI_Clue3_StripsCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiRjkLqXuGnwhVh_UUmRKpTetaYBdaBSymzo4dkpPv4H5-S4L60TA3ZPwlgDRwg-CgwZgQVJ6h_aheMvFyqzH5DldYcqxNHoXYzPtES3TKD6pvK1ZoW7JVbwhE6jNC7WdNy_Jxm9cRYU3T/s1600/GI_Clue3_StripsCut.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I first paired up a green strip with a white or black strip, until all my strips were sewn together. Here they are, waiting to be pressed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEief1zOKGJ5DyTOnAMDm-no57q9jeWIXTLzWOHXqyjF_wmsbBGYUgBgSLoB0F_MgGzug8JNPPf7pJM0fQZOZRZ7YVVBQUe1TYWvg-Y31imRb2Zn1lEN4QJ6gguy4OZRUVriA0mAb6cD8mYH/s1600/GI_Clue3_StripPairsSewn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEief1zOKGJ5DyTOnAMDm-no57q9jeWIXTLzWOHXqyjF_wmsbBGYUgBgSLoB0F_MgGzug8JNPPf7pJM0fQZOZRZ7YVVBQUe1TYWvg-Y31imRb2Zn1lEN4QJ6gguy4OZRUVriA0mAb6cD8mYH/s1600/GI_Clue3_StripPairsSewn.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I was in the middle of pressing my strips when my iron decided it didn't want to live any more. It made a popping, crackling kind of noise and then smoke started pouring out of it. I immediately unplugged it and took it outside. I couldn't see where the smoke was coming from, so to be safe I hosed it down. The smoke kept coming out, and if I held it up in front of me, I could see waves of heat rising from the iron... not good. So I filled a bucket with water and submerged the iron to be certain the fire was put out.<br />
<br />
Of course, an iron is needed to finish this clue so I immediately headed out to get a new one. A girl's got to have her priorities straight LOL! This is what I came home with. It's lightweight and gets nice and hot. The only thing I wish is that I could turn off the steam at higher temperatures, but for $30 I can put up with it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCJe8uFEfwjYcJnWINiFwaHAsIw3iePkn0w3j0evr4qoF3OqnS_8-MolL3n4tE39-FX96kqn7LCF5pV6-m8DtJjWSZ9Fd9qv54MSh8wqsyhZmOdx7qK4neGfO_Z1Yi80CJqhVmwwb7jApE/s1600/GI_Clue3_NewIron.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCJe8uFEfwjYcJnWINiFwaHAsIw3iePkn0w3j0evr4qoF3OqnS_8-MolL3n4tE39-FX96kqn7LCF5pV6-m8DtJjWSZ9Fd9qv54MSh8wqsyhZmOdx7qK4neGfO_Z1Yi80CJqhVmwwb7jApE/s1600/GI_Clue3_NewIron.jpg" height="287" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Back to Clue #3! Once my strip pairs were pressed, I paired up these units until I had enough to cut the pieces needed for the final blocks. I tried my best to not have duplicate fabrics in each block, for more variety. Here they are, my finished blocks!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwGSPCJf2D4WdNWQUH1EfjlEOQtzVcrWhlj9NNmwGQo4_v14_Q36aHg8QhtC97FEar3xgN_b4r__nBUCOIruHCbBC93WbDpqd4GBWo5keEDFWppOaZgvbzXHXK67EPJlK70rT0Sr_ZYyQ/s1600/GI_Clue3_Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwGSPCJf2D4WdNWQUH1EfjlEOQtzVcrWhlj9NNmwGQo4_v14_Q36aHg8QhtC97FEar3xgN_b4r__nBUCOIruHCbBC93WbDpqd4GBWo5keEDFWppOaZgvbzXHXK67EPJlK70rT0Sr_ZYyQ/s1600/GI_Clue3_Finished.jpg" height="291" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm so happy with the way this mystery is turning out so far. And like all of Bonnie's mysteries, I have no clue how these units will be put together into the final arrangement.. but that's part of the fun. :) Now to wait (not so patiently) for Clue #4.<br />
<br />

<br />
You can download the clue from the Quiltville blog until sometime around June 2015, at which point it will be retired for inclusion in a future book. If you're even thinking of working on this quilt, download the clues and save them... or else you'll have to wait until the book comes out. :)<br /><br /><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/grand-illusion-mystery.html" target="_blank">Grand Illusion Mystery</a><br /><br /> Every Monday after a clue is posted, Bonnie has a Mystery Link-Up where participants can share photos of their progress, like I've done in this blog. <br />
As soon as I woke up, I ran to my computer to download the clue for myself. Because I am on the West Coast, my news feed on Facebook was full of photos of units that others to the East of me had made. What fun! Unfortunately, I had plans to be out in the morning and only had time to make up two test units before I had to leave.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_oM2YKoJSNuZH04xYDvpsjPAuRLx4RjBIjFD6ptc-VNgcpyJCFUpEWPVpzGqSxAae2omLsnSo7kY3CmmcD9aamVuDARORty9-I7lrDc3T36cknXeBurWRh8tTtyox9eJf51MohnqBBO1/s1600/GI_Clue2_TestUnits.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_oM2YKoJSNuZH04xYDvpsjPAuRLx4RjBIjFD6ptc-VNgcpyJCFUpEWPVpzGqSxAae2omLsnSo7kY3CmmcD9aamVuDARORty9-I7lrDc3T36cknXeBurWRh8tTtyox9eJf51MohnqBBO1/s1600/GI_Clue2_TestUnits.jpg" height="287" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Bonnie gave us three different methods to make this unit. I tried her template method, my test unit is on the right. Unfortunately, it came out a little bit too small, by 1/8". Next I tried the last method she suggested, the sew-and-flip method, and I got a perfectly sized unit... so this is the method I used for the rest of my units.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgUW1MbJz_V8yJhdpLlarME260TtjMY_U-Ye_krbPu3PhTk1GcWviV_C86At1gGrfnP-uccNitElnr0fc2i-VIcOAti-fUcEvBf-1KulJPhKDcapPLO5vNU6gfNOzrTHcXqCJSjpuMA66c/s1600/GI_Clue2_PiecesCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgUW1MbJz_V8yJhdpLlarME260TtjMY_U-Ye_krbPu3PhTk1GcWviV_C86At1gGrfnP-uccNitElnr0fc2i-VIcOAti-fUcEvBf-1KulJPhKDcapPLO5vNU6gfNOzrTHcXqCJSjpuMA66c/s1600/GI_Clue2_PiecesCut.jpg" height="282" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
All my pieces are cut and ready to be sewn! In order to keep this from being overwhelming, I attacked this in stages. I would work on 20 units at a time: sew, trim, flip and press. This made the job seem more manageable and less daunting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWEy3VHMLNtMWVxXf2BfD4jeLrqCaA1UThPI34njJVnabs0ZedYrwyBtYyBuVhuOpyQDrGW15QtsHq_OYkYTKUasOamE-slC6475ElY6rBBaQVUh7jOhZb5Qzz4WbTaoa4RxaoCPdHXzcQ/s1600/GI_Clue2_UnitsReady.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWEy3VHMLNtMWVxXf2BfD4jeLrqCaA1UThPI34njJVnabs0ZedYrwyBtYyBuVhuOpyQDrGW15QtsHq_OYkYTKUasOamE-slC6475ElY6rBBaQVUh7jOhZb5Qzz4WbTaoa4RxaoCPdHXzcQ/s1600/GI_Clue2_UnitsReady.jpg" height="237" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
See? I got all my units sewn in no time! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8yV_uJS7TEaBiaeZbdM6j-h_LxaqGN-mZOqo8mUmZnuvo0oljYbiHpk9ebcP_JWmia7zpS123JdL01ToXCbYp5V1WIMyDU2HOTTGOU8lQezQauylm34Rqy_83r7q90grVfRWKdl9rS8xa/s1600/GI_Clue2_Trimmings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8yV_uJS7TEaBiaeZbdM6j-h_LxaqGN-mZOqo8mUmZnuvo0oljYbiHpk9ebcP_JWmia7zpS123JdL01ToXCbYp5V1WIMyDU2HOTTGOU8lQezQauylm34Rqy_83r7q90grVfRWKdl9rS8xa/s1600/GI_Clue2_Trimmings.jpg" height="301" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And look at that pile of trimmings! I put my rotary cutter next to it so you can see just how large this pile is. No, I didn't sew them into HSTs, I honestly don't have the time right now. I did save them to my crumbs bag, one of these days I would like to make a crumb quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgog-Z8FuFoSIJF5-KELrhR5TiEDtSnykrcwwNlbXL05rGTl134Vd61XlUemRJiaNysl98zmB6sUF3nkXz1FP0Zwbkfy12D8b7lQDInxyd-X1xMQOqNZNh6oq9Roe9PDVuxym4cqQIzKqAA/s1600/GI_Clue2_Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgog-Z8FuFoSIJF5-KELrhR5TiEDtSnykrcwwNlbXL05rGTl134Vd61XlUemRJiaNysl98zmB6sUF3nkXz1FP0Zwbkfy12D8b7lQDInxyd-X1xMQOqNZNh6oq9Roe9PDVuxym4cqQIzKqAA/s1600/GI_Clue2_Finished.jpg" height="404" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And voila! All my blocks for Clue #2 are finished! I'm really liking how my colors are turning out.<br />
<br />
At this point, however, I may need to put the mystery aside. I just had a BIG project dropped in my lap which I will have to focus on as it actually has a deadline LOL. Or, I might use the mystery as incentive to keep myself motivated on this deadline project so that I can carve out a little time to play. We will just have to wait and see what happens. :)<br />
<br />
Have fun, everyone!<br />

Yippee! There was much excitement in the air as quilters across the globe hurried to download the clue and get started.<br />
<br />
You can download the clue from the Quiltville blog until sometime around June 2015, at which point it will be retired for inclusion in a future book. If you're even thinking of working on this quilt, download the clues and save them... or else you'll have to wait until the book comes out. :)<br />

<br />
Every Monday after a clue is posted, Bonnie has a Mystery Link-Up where participants can share photos of their progress, like I've done in this blog. Be sure to check it out and see all the wonderful variations in color and fabric!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2014/12/mystery-monday-link-up-part-1.html" target="_blank">Mystery Monday Link-Up, Part 1</a><br />
<br />
If you remember from my last post, I'm mixing my colors up a bit from Bonnie's colors. Instead of aqua and pink, I'm using blue and purple. But the black and yellow remain the same.<br />
<br />
Here are all my pairs of blue and purple triangles, cut with my Easy Angle ruler, and ready to sew.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6Vp3ysJQDdfItNhUL-5rsqnoM82OvVlBfiimHfNgYkY_p6l5_m2R67KTJXBzYip7ZHusD3w7VSXea98qEtUbmg8G1lYjJF74Eq5o6nf39ALrBdXqf9_VtJPLA9JffHna8o-tf3yKHpGXM/s1600/GI_Clue1_HSTsCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6Vp3ysJQDdfItNhUL-5rsqnoM82OvVlBfiimHfNgYkY_p6l5_m2R67KTJXBzYip7ZHusD3w7VSXea98qEtUbmg8G1lYjJF74Eq5o6nf39ALrBdXqf9_VtJPLA9JffHna8o-tf3yKHpGXM/s1600/GI_Clue1_HSTsCut.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, it took a while to get through all of these triangles, but working in chunks I managed to get them all finished!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Kql0CxPEnFwTUWLG7SFXE3rVxhc8kCQjBpAGOlZca4p3tdeUvsAKv74GH5G0B07mjX1e3jfThZ4ImWrf6_ztXTfNN19MK0eFLcnkOSPO92W5Bmhu7aCyyuhKFWAGsYwq1ITsCt0HVYMS/s1600/GI_Clue1_HSTsFinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Kql0CxPEnFwTUWLG7SFXE3rVxhc8kCQjBpAGOlZca4p3tdeUvsAKv74GH5G0B07mjX1e3jfThZ4ImWrf6_ztXTfNN19MK0eFLcnkOSPO92W5Bmhu7aCyyuhKFWAGsYwq1ITsCt0HVYMS/s1600/GI_Clue1_HSTsFinished.jpg" height="290" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the HST were finished, I cut out my black and yellow squares. Bonnie is sticking with a single color of yellow in her quilt, so I decided to do the same. If you choose to go scrappy with your yellows, that's perfectly OK because it is YOUR quilt, make it however you want to! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5UpEuFMkKT5T9tl9tP2hF16AGUFfXU0S2JItc_elRRc3W9QXHQ2eJTIa2GsLZuLeh6vwlXIDiAZqgw2S0XjHFFVRc15CzBfobJF4WShnhvw9Vcuz3eNfbwEwDTVR1AWfFvZjJGRzDJeM8/s1600/GI_Clue1_BlackYellowCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5UpEuFMkKT5T9tl9tP2hF16AGUFfXU0S2JItc_elRRc3W9QXHQ2eJTIa2GsLZuLeh6vwlXIDiAZqgw2S0XjHFFVRc15CzBfobJF4WShnhvw9Vcuz3eNfbwEwDTVR1AWfFvZjJGRzDJeM8/s1600/GI_Clue1_BlackYellowCut.jpg" height="283" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once again, I worked in chunks to get the black and yellow squares sewn to the HST, pressed, and then paired up into Broken Dishes blocks as directed by the pattern.<br />
<br />
And voila! Here are all my completed units for Clue 1!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Already I'm having so much fun on this mystery, and I can hardly wait for Clue #2 to come out. Of course, I've got plans to be out and about for a large chunk of Friday, and I'll be in a 12K running race on Saturday... think I can get the clue done on Sunday? We'll just have to wait and see what happens. :)<br />

It's time for the next Bonnie Hunter mystery! She gave us a nice surprise by announcing the name and posting her colors and required yardage a few days earlier than in years past.<br />
<br />
This year's mystery is called Grand Illusion. Here is a link to her Intro with colors and yardage:<br /><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2014/10/surprise-quiltville-winter-mystery.html" target="_blank">Quiltville's Grand Illusion Intro</a><br />
<br />
With Bonnie's mysteries, sometimes her colors call to me, such as <a href="http://valeriespatchwork.blogspot.com/2013/01/making-easy-street-im-done.html" target="_blank">Easy Street</a>. I had to make that quilt based on the colors alone LOL. Sometimes, the colors don't speak to me at all or I have been inspired by another color scheme and I switch out the colors, such as with <a href="http://valeriespatchwork.blogspot.com/2014/02/celtic-solstice-finished.html" target="_blank">Celtic Solstice</a>. This year, I liked some of the colors she chose, but not others, so I'm mixing things up and making the colors mine.<br />
<br />
Not wanting to rush anything, I gave myself time to consider my color choices. One person on Quiltville's Open Studio swapped the pink for purple, and I really liked that. But then I'd have a quilt with green, teal, and purple again, which is already in Easy Street and I didn't want my colors to be too similar. I hemmed and hawed, until one night while binding a quilt I looked over at the spools of thread I had on the table. There was a spool of bright green and a spool of bright blue sitting next to each other, and I loved the way they looked. Then it hit me... these would be great colors to use for my Grand Illusion quilt!<br />
<br />
Without further ado, here are my colors for Grand Illusion:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGOnMidJ1TdnIw8u4Fj5aapxn2axJlUMgg6opAjplEpS4Vv0ObTcSfMJB_2j5yNfkSszxBnnvsj-giY7TbfiInVRvElVDEDw6px_3WTpGaJunlhj_uMSz1yySqJMabyP5WIO8S3rayIP_X/s1600/GrandIllusionFabrics.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGOnMidJ1TdnIw8u4Fj5aapxn2axJlUMgg6opAjplEpS4Vv0ObTcSfMJB_2j5yNfkSszxBnnvsj-giY7TbfiInVRvElVDEDw6px_3WTpGaJunlhj_uMSz1yySqJMabyP5WIO8S3rayIP_X/s1600/GrandIllusionFabrics.jpg" height="640" width="548" /></a></div>
<br />
I will keep the black and the yellow that Bonnie indicated. I'm keeping my neutrals white, I have a mix of white-on-white fabrics and some with a light print and a white background. I will swap purple in place of pink. My greens are brighter, and I'm using bright blue instead of teal. My colors are jewel tones, and I think it's going to look very nice. :)<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgwbNyScgee3R-ZN4spmtF5HcKd8utB3yk5J3zU5kWlKczPZSQ0DpCGaWvNC1QulBulqhFHsTUh7ai91fP3Gm-mfUHkWQyGvaIxRJc7fWcSWBtECkb6z4jGgA1nGfllrtPOW0EaPbHL5-0/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Siggie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgwbNyScgee3R-ZN4spmtF5HcKd8utB3yk5J3zU5kWlKczPZSQ0DpCGaWvNC1QulBulqhFHsTUh7ai91fP3Gm-mfUHkWQyGvaIxRJc7fWcSWBtECkb6z4jGgA1nGfllrtPOW0EaPbHL5-0/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Siggie.jpg" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Recently, I was given the honor of repairing a quilt made in 1941. I adore antique quilts, and having the chance to help bring this one back to life was an honor and an amazing experience.<br />
<br />
It is a beautiful Sunbonnet Sue quilt with very detailed Sues appliqued and embroidered to a butter yellow background. The entire quilt was sewn by hand, and then quilted by hand. The blocks were quilted with diagonals, and the border quilted with a feathered swag and a cross-hatch pattern. The edge was finished with prairie points.<br />
<br />
My client's relative (grandmother, I think?) made this quilt and it has been well loved over the years. It eventually went into storage, the relative passed away, and later a niece was born and named after the relative, so the decision was made to give the niece this quilt. They pulled it out of storage, to find it moth damaged, stained, and in need of some TLC.<br />
<br />
This is the quilt, before I did any work on it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDBdZPBHpOHbTlPPIjXcd0gpjcDOhnEyEnJPPctNHKg7wcrOzv9LdKkMNeY8mfKUBH6LdnfhK0UHFd2HCLL0Es6ZmEEqK8XSS0SKvMwEqWKkKtodDt-aCCOyaMxGENbUad0GpPHpRPilpr/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_WholeQuilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDBdZPBHpOHbTlPPIjXcd0gpjcDOhnEyEnJPPctNHKg7wcrOzv9LdKkMNeY8mfKUBH6LdnfhK0UHFd2HCLL0Es6ZmEEqK8XSS0SKvMwEqWKkKtodDt-aCCOyaMxGENbUad0GpPHpRPilpr/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_WholeQuilt.jpg" height="393" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's lovely and I'm sure was simply stunning when it was brand new, but time has not been kind to it. The quilt had been washed to try and remove the stain, but it was not entirely successful. There is a hole in the quilt, to the right of the stain, between the purple and green Sues. The prairie points are disintegrating, and the fabric of the top border is fraying away.<br />
<br />
Since my client just wanted the quilt stabilized and not completely repaired (which I don't think I could have done, to be honest), we focused on the two big things: The hole in the quilt and the fraying borders. I also recommended turning the quilt into a wall hanging, so that it could be viewed and enjoyed, but in a way that would be much safer for the quilt than actually being on a young girl's bed.<br />
<br />
The first thing I did was to tackle the hole in the quilt. Here is a close-up image of the hole before I worked with it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyvwicZEOE8xG500GF6Rsnuoaf04gXu9CT41m6bZw3OQnlGzUW8g3OhOiwLS5cZvuEaQCPHh3ilYK5AXczPonusjyL922A_LBsMHyDyv0F5y6SnQk1rHLacmDxrrWnq3RynBpAVuhGWyCW/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Hole.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyvwicZEOE8xG500GF6Rsnuoaf04gXu9CT41m6bZw3OQnlGzUW8g3OhOiwLS5cZvuEaQCPHh3ilYK5AXczPonusjyL922A_LBsMHyDyv0F5y6SnQk1rHLacmDxrrWnq3RynBpAVuhGWyCW/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Hole.jpg" height="315" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One good thing about this hole is it allowed me to see into the quilt, so I could see how it was constructed. Older quilts didn't always use batting in the center, sometimes old thin blankets known as sheet blankets were used. Sometimes a piece of flannel was used. I could see that this quilt did in fact use a very thin batting, so I dug through my batting scraps to find a suitably thin piece to use to patch the hole.<br />
<br />
To get my batting piece the right shape, I first put a piece of paper under the quilt, so I could trace the shape of the hole onto the paper, and used that as a pattern to cut the batting piece. I then stitched it into place by hand using a big basting stitch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvOd3cfdGWMp4rPl21AAX-gVAJ56SQcS1uCxbFXx0Y9N5YesSqHK87xiA5nONvbbUPuPdkNrQGhKlIdZnGaHOrQjpHl3TtK1tf-Y4dmPEWoxwpsnLIVXv3YRmGluz7JwT0FQMVOFvXLD5/s1600/1941Quilt_Middle_Hole.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvOd3cfdGWMp4rPl21AAX-gVAJ56SQcS1uCxbFXx0Y9N5YesSqHK87xiA5nONvbbUPuPdkNrQGhKlIdZnGaHOrQjpHl3TtK1tf-Y4dmPEWoxwpsnLIVXv3YRmGluz7JwT0FQMVOFvXLD5/s1600/1941Quilt_Middle_Hole.jpg" height="277" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the batting was secured, I made a template from clear template plastic to make an applique shape that I could sew on top of the hole. It needed to be big enough to completely cover the batting and basting stitches, and so that the edges of the applique piece were over good, solid fabric that would be able to take my stitches as I appliqued it in place.<br />
<br />
The clear template plastic ensured that I could see the hole and the fabric around it so I could trace my applique shape adequately large. Then I cut out two applique pieces, one in yellow for the front of the quilt and one in white for the back (as the backing was muslin). With matching thread, I hand stitched the applique pieces both on the top and the back of the quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9S0xaPS6DuRy1rQ2HSTfWc5yO5qaJw25epF8QseyzXXsxS_xgW0kTTPvj4IJCGMbF5IQ3nWLMZXB2DOsNrbZto1tMVC9WYTB_jdJi54lrTYBngHqENzACQtfadfq1n8zZH7nPJsEc0Ihe/s1600/1941Quilt_Middle_Hole2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9S0xaPS6DuRy1rQ2HSTfWc5yO5qaJw25epF8QseyzXXsxS_xgW0kTTPvj4IJCGMbF5IQ3nWLMZXB2DOsNrbZto1tMVC9WYTB_jdJi54lrTYBngHqENzACQtfadfq1n8zZH7nPJsEc0Ihe/s1600/1941Quilt_Middle_Hole2.jpg" height="290" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After the applique pieces were both sewn on, I quilted over the patch, following the lines of quilting that already existed. Though the hand quilting was done with white thread, I was afraid that machine quilting with white thread would be too visible and look out of place, so I used matching thread instead. It helps the new quilting to blend in with the existing quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglhUUGdLfU1TWiENKVmex_KxW3CKFjHolklM3pTHqKIo5_r2he8gxrrs0j48TSxVwmmJsasaVDttfXJrTu5X2KDZ77UyUJqgxaTVpZor8p-aDmlW5hqV27EE0R_02aH0LbMOC1eHwX77mr/s1600/1941Quilt_After_Hole.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglhUUGdLfU1TWiENKVmex_KxW3CKFjHolklM3pTHqKIo5_r2he8gxrrs0j48TSxVwmmJsasaVDttfXJrTu5X2KDZ77UyUJqgxaTVpZor8p-aDmlW5hqV27EE0R_02aH0LbMOC1eHwX77mr/s1600/1941Quilt_After_Hole.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now that the hole has been repaired and the quilt has been stabilized, it is time to repair the borders. The easiest way to do this was to simply sew new fabric on top of the existing borders and quilt the new fabric to the quilt. I must admit, even though the borders were in bad shape, it almost killed me to cover up the beautiful hand quilting. At least it is still visible on the back of the quilt!<br />
<br />
See what I mean? Beautiful!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHvKQ2n6SgMHl_tqswRQErauWrwvMD-cVO6aO6uwpw7fb5pYcufnByrAmqwbgglj3Ire5jfc0Yftbhuqqpmmrqda0Y0ejJovvf4ydfHhy7CoODPTpNTjpsGpBLgV-9o3iGZEd5nlellE8/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Border1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHvKQ2n6SgMHl_tqswRQErauWrwvMD-cVO6aO6uwpw7fb5pYcufnByrAmqwbgglj3Ire5jfc0Yftbhuqqpmmrqda0Y0ejJovvf4ydfHhy7CoODPTpNTjpsGpBLgV-9o3iGZEd5nlellE8/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Border1.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But this was the state of the top border on the quilt, you can see how badly damaged it is. Something simply had to be done to repair the borders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWyViBK3rgAmobhKm0m88xPpLCFPseZ3R96n38Ucec3bGmudbfqkyGDDEdloPscq-WgE-2Rj50yIeFMF4Co_itzjjgh1fc_66XT9-1Yfh6km50p9SfCJeF7CccYVPHv0mN4EtK8CCiZClN/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Border2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWyViBK3rgAmobhKm0m88xPpLCFPseZ3R96n38Ucec3bGmudbfqkyGDDEdloPscq-WgE-2Rj50yIeFMF4Co_itzjjgh1fc_66XT9-1Yfh6km50p9SfCJeF7CccYVPHv0mN4EtK8CCiZClN/s1600/1941Quilt_Before_Border2.jpg" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
First things first, I had to trim off the prairie points. Then, using the same yellow fabric I used to patch the hole, I sewed new border fabric onto the quilt top, with the raw edge of the new border fabric following the seam line of the original borders. I used the same matching thread to do the quilting, making a straight line pattern that almost mimics the look of a piano key border. This quilting was easy to do and maintained the style decision of the maker to have the quilting of the borders differ from the quilting in the blocks.<br />

<br />
Once the new borders had been completed, I added a basic binding around the whole quilt to finish it. I also added a hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt, using a piece of 1930's reproduction fabric from my stash that complimented the fabrics in the Sues' dresses on the quilt front.<br />
<br />
Here is the repaired quilt:<br />

My client was very happy with the quilt repairs, and I had a fantastic time doing what I could do help preserve this piece of quilting history.<br />
<br />
What about you? Have you ever had an opportunity to repair or restore an antique quilt?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's done! My Celtic Solstice quilt is finally done!</span></div>
<br />
I made the smaller version of the quilt, but it wasn't quite large enough for my needs so I extended it a bit. I added the checkerboard border to the top and bottom of the quilt to lengthen it a little, and I also added a border all around the quilt, using a grey print that was too perfect to pass up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw1Wtz_HlL3X-Ak4QIqHFsRCcJ5XzijPXwbB7zwIfzkzJiJxmTJw-p2LwusJKJn_jsRA8Ge9w9USZzWKhhc9zXQ4FsM4nFYnAlT19zBRQNDANXF6WOqXANpwlwSILezQF7SPnCrHIasQSk/s1600/CelticSolstice_GreyBorderFabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw1Wtz_HlL3X-Ak4QIqHFsRCcJ5XzijPXwbB7zwIfzkzJiJxmTJw-p2LwusJKJn_jsRA8Ge9w9USZzWKhhc9zXQ4FsM4nFYnAlT19zBRQNDANXF6WOqXANpwlwSILezQF7SPnCrHIasQSk/s1600/CelticSolstice_GreyBorderFabric.jpg" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I mean, look at that print! It really mimics the effect that the pieced blocks in Bonnie's quilt achieve. This wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I went looking for a border fabric, but it fits the bill perfectly and I'm glad I used it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEnOZzeuISFx6RXfCZ5jTuygDpN6FbtRTC2sMWWHqL5S2Uhqdnm-GmHarsWTGkD6gXQziNkbrG9NeIfr-jj4yLE6qerYK4GYvGa9R2xlf2b41rMbIDbmcs2IOmZKV-ve_9zEAOPsxgIB1N/s1600/CelticSolstice_Finished2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEnOZzeuISFx6RXfCZ5jTuygDpN6FbtRTC2sMWWHqL5S2Uhqdnm-GmHarsWTGkD6gXQziNkbrG9NeIfr-jj4yLE6qerYK4GYvGa9R2xlf2b41rMbIDbmcs2IOmZKV-ve_9zEAOPsxgIB1N/s1600/CelticSolstice_Finished2.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted it with a simple meander, which will be fine for a bed quilt. The meander gives the quilt texture without being too complicated, plus I didn't have a pantograph that really seemed to "go" with the quilt. I used white thread for the quilting, I really had wanted a light blue but none of my blue threads looked right. That's OK, the white worked just fine.<br />
<br />

<br />
I want my items to have a professional look to them, so I decided I wanted some labels to sew onto my projects. Not big huge tags, but little ones like you see sewn onto the hemlines of some shirts, or sticking out from the trim on a bag. Then I came across a link on Pinterest that talked about exactly the kind of labels I was wanting. That blog writer recommended this Etsy shop, where she had her labels made:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/worldsalelabel" target="_blank">Worldwide Label</a><br />
<br />
This shop is located in Hong Kong, and I guess they must deal with large volumes of label making because (to me) the communication was pretty slow. I'd ask a question, and it might be 2-3 days (sometimes more) before getting a response. Of course, I'm always on the computer and I'm very much a now.Now.NOW kind of person, so to me a response time longer than a day is "slow". So take that into consideration LOL. However, despite my impatience, they were very professional, answered my questions well, and the end result blew me away.<br />
<br />
Finally, after much anticipation, my labels arrived!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHj3EJf4CxaeSb9q93XNhEQAKssFzaTrzKWCV8ZI8RT4Cruw3_iFDT0wEJc6nFawBiOtLPT03qNv53aN8ay4cuaku_YRAxTWmRe40TSkBuzcMf_CvG0GZnyGLKSPjc5J8Xxqw9DOqaBpL/s1600/LittleLabels1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHj3EJf4CxaeSb9q93XNhEQAKssFzaTrzKWCV8ZI8RT4Cruw3_iFDT0wEJc6nFawBiOtLPT03qNv53aN8ay4cuaku_YRAxTWmRe40TSkBuzcMf_CvG0GZnyGLKSPjc5J8Xxqw9DOqaBpL/s1600/LittleLabels1.jpg" height="586" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Aren't they just too cute? They turned out beautifully, exactly what I was wanting. And they're the perfect little size to add on to my sewn projects. Of course, I had to try them out as soon as I got them out of the box, so I made some rice-filled neck ice/heat packs and sewed a label into each one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here they are! My first items with my tag sewn on. How cute did they turn out? Oh, I'm so excited!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYuoinCPqyGI9H4NrISoRfJ2grrzhNhLK8vSWs1L2KzHNX1ouomglwL8w7Gn5gGafCXkKXG58cAfxE9F3InJFpbP66E8OJpuLfmIULz2MxQ7FqcFhl-a7zjoSY8WMT_bQG68VcUrdmOZoO/s1600/LittleLabels3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYuoinCPqyGI9H4NrISoRfJ2grrzhNhLK8vSWs1L2KzHNX1ouomglwL8w7Gn5gGafCXkKXG58cAfxE9F3InJFpbP66E8OJpuLfmIULz2MxQ7FqcFhl-a7zjoSY8WMT_bQG68VcUrdmOZoO/s1600/LittleLabels3.jpg" height="538" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have 300 of these little labels to use up, so I'd better get cracking with making my items. :)<br />

<br />
Bonnie surprised us by publishing the final clue of <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/celtic-solstice-mystery.html" target="_blank">Celtic Solstice</a> on New Year's Day! It was definitely fun to see the final design and how all our units played together, but at the same time it was a sad day, knowing that we were done playing until next year. Be that as it may, I got right to work on assembling my quilt.<br />
<br />
First, we put together these blocks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGIrhxufNmJFXvxyF0tR_1NkoeSwVtKdyJI84aGyAUeL91W5HABS2GH6VMEcy1RUvNYl0fHsZ1PtfQ3Q52iU7IRdcsdW6bXAWkkPSD62MokPoFOxZLcOfp9KKvhVm8Yb0gaTFxTVdC4zJ/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGIrhxufNmJFXvxyF0tR_1NkoeSwVtKdyJI84aGyAUeL91W5HABS2GH6VMEcy1RUvNYl0fHsZ1PtfQ3Q52iU7IRdcsdW6bXAWkkPSD62MokPoFOxZLcOfp9KKvhVm8Yb0gaTFxTVdC4zJ/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo1.jpg" height="243" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, we put together these blocks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJJdaXiO-3MZKwQfNYmN23vcy7rEes80y9oEBBnYHinlfyU-qMDN60PyCuf4ETsRbFZals1kqs71GMaXfJUNQkADDjlFqw5dGFxxgEyzmNMyYFK7LAZUlJz0Dgg6XCnBebNIVxZNGmoo-m/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJJdaXiO-3MZKwQfNYmN23vcy7rEes80y9oEBBnYHinlfyU-qMDN60PyCuf4ETsRbFZals1kqs71GMaXfJUNQkADDjlFqw5dGFxxgEyzmNMyYFK7LAZUlJz0Dgg6XCnBebNIVxZNGmoo-m/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo2.jpg" height="233" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The blocks are set together so they alternate:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi44caz-fxcSd-xVYzwd41QiTFFbo-G_3v2Mc6EWnuqXUnBR_F8um9IoXD_flLf4wL05q_b8xfZNrauQAsty1HfNoJyg2rhahbWg3WuZKdeccGF0MMjQDhPAWxoZz0PCLoJ4gZEfWQKhWUI/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi44caz-fxcSd-xVYzwd41QiTFFbo-G_3v2Mc6EWnuqXUnBR_F8um9IoXD_flLf4wL05q_b8xfZNrauQAsty1HfNoJyg2rhahbWg3WuZKdeccGF0MMjQDhPAWxoZz0PCLoJ4gZEfWQKhWUI/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo4.jpg" height="272" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
What a fantastic secondary design they create once they are put together! I nearly fell over when I saw Bonnie's quilt all finished. Of course, I had to lay out a few rows to see how the design would look in my colors:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYFnGrTq5riEnyBHndNoYDKqhBvIcWIOQIba4WggcL1tybmw2gYkD5oNPLWJY2NMOs-IjA_a60Q_zRbTwdAsJa_pJ6X7IqUe7JMPXSyFkO5BeZbWooGsR6ZOmlbwZ07qb4JkgOuwF5iNs8/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYFnGrTq5riEnyBHndNoYDKqhBvIcWIOQIba4WggcL1tybmw2gYkD5oNPLWJY2NMOs-IjA_a60Q_zRbTwdAsJa_pJ6X7IqUe7JMPXSyFkO5BeZbWooGsR6ZOmlbwZ07qb4JkgOuwF5iNs8/s1600/CelticSolstice_P6D1_Photo5.jpg" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Squeeeee! Oh wow, I'm really loving this!<br />
<br />
It took me 2 days to get the blocks assembled and the rows sewn together. There I had to let this project sit while I got some work done on a project with a deadline. But today was my play day, the day I save for MY projects, so I buckled down and finished my top:<br />

<br />
Wowsa! I really like the way this quilt has turned out! This is as far as Bonnie's pattern took us. However, I do have a plan to make the quilt bigger by adding a row of chevrons along the top and bottom, and then adding yet another border all the way around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF0zxa_O0SK-2TcNJIXwWEC8QC5dfqZm0A7V4eQ3hE4WWNGN7CUK-kNG4UMiUymialltbLHuf5_98fuLhFUbXt8za_OTeyJ7SsM6L-cgcobrCJLc-Ujxv7GWdtgCBkmyACsfQ2CYtimg_X/s1600/CelticSolstice_Extended.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF0zxa_O0SK-2TcNJIXwWEC8QC5dfqZm0A7V4eQ3hE4WWNGN7CUK-kNG4UMiUymialltbLHuf5_98fuLhFUbXt8za_OTeyJ7SsM6L-cgcobrCJLc-Ujxv7GWdtgCBkmyACsfQ2CYtimg_X/s1600/CelticSolstice_Extended.JPG" height="400" width="365" /></a></div>
<br />
I may still do this, if I can find the right print for that outer most border. I want to bring out more of the grey that is in the quilt, so if I can find a suitable print in grey with maybe some red and blue in it, that would be perfect. I'm also rethinking the chevrons, I may instead make pinwheels or maybe 4-patches. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?<br />
<br />

How times flies when we're having fun!<br />
<br />
This week we were making Split Triangle Units. I'm making the smaller quilt, which meant that I needed to make 100 units. Remember those "extra" or "leftover" HST units from Part 3? They are being used in the making of these units.<br />
<br />
I have a funny aside for you though. When Bonnie said to use the "leftover" HST, somehow I got it in my mind that these were "bonus" HST that you get from trimming. Oh no! Did I miss a step? Did I throw away scraps I should have kept? Desperately I went back to view Clue #3... where I remembered that we had made those extra HST units and didn't turn them into pinwheels. Whew! Disaster averted! It was definitely time for more coffee because I obviously wasn't completely awake yet LOL.<br />
<br />
Here are all my pieces, cut out and laid out and ready to be sewn together... including those extra HST:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_kS6uLNj-RWjqteIBrvIQk5wXiRNwMfMuBdXjfKpdeuoeMZWmubw1oipFaJlpb2jbp0HEro3b6jvG-mE38nqY-1-EO34SnjjdbLpOQJOacNSSO3ocE_T70rnEOrp1OXrzFsG1MnHxs4ze/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_kS6uLNj-RWjqteIBrvIQk5wXiRNwMfMuBdXjfKpdeuoeMZWmubw1oipFaJlpb2jbp0HEro3b6jvG-mE38nqY-1-EO34SnjjdbLpOQJOacNSSO3ocE_T70rnEOrp1OXrzFsG1MnHxs4ze/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a block all laid out, to test out how the pieces will go together and how the colors will play with each other. I think I'm going to like this unit!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvX2hqMrwxyuJ_CYrSFkZYGIsNZXs5rWYimEhSNQjxHwkx4zeB1Q4FfrWRPdZ37gSELDPjxCc_GhlHMhchyQmpntfmynvlOJyYMekQMz53ZqmAlherMxbhpHMxEokJIgoRTCiQQMrVJQH/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvX2hqMrwxyuJ_CYrSFkZYGIsNZXs5rWYimEhSNQjxHwkx4zeB1Q4FfrWRPdZ37gSELDPjxCc_GhlHMhchyQmpntfmynvlOJyYMekQMz53ZqmAlherMxbhpHMxEokJIgoRTCiQQMrVJQH/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Look! All finished! Yippee!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsoof0-D44Ra65rhskfmphzYnrfK6_NtF4s5HXevQeUyxzGoRShYbmolIhsuCPgyV4y6UyZVrVsUKb92ZmugMXMg9OljZ7FIW0KExBdT9xzq2-8CSWbqEj_SjaafIFk8zLppojjY7fMU-4/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsoof0-D44Ra65rhskfmphzYnrfK6_NtF4s5HXevQeUyxzGoRShYbmolIhsuCPgyV4y6UyZVrVsUKb92ZmugMXMg9OljZ7FIW0KExBdT9xzq2-8CSWbqEj_SjaafIFk8zLppojjY7fMU-4/s640/CelticSolstice_Clue5_Photo3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course, my curious engineer's mind has been trying to figure out how these units will go together. Bonnie said that the small quilt will finish at about 75" x 75". That could be divided up into 25 blocks set 5x5, with each block measuring 15". Each block would use a total of 25 Clue Units set 5x5 (each unit finishes at 3", and 3" x 5 = 15").<br />
<br />
We have 25 pinwheels from Clue #3, which could each be the center of a block. We've made 100 Units in both Clue #2 and Clue #5, which can be divided up so each block gets 4 of each. But my math falls apart when we get to Clue #1 (having made 92 and 96 Units in two colorways) and Clue #4 (having made 120 Units).<br />
<br />
So really, this is me just saying that I have no idea how these units are going to be used and how the blocks will turn out. What will come next week? Will we make even more units? Will we begin assembling blocks? Only time will tell. :)<br />
<br />

<br />
Today Bonnie promised us an easy clue for <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/celtic-solstice-mystery.html" target="_blank">Celtic Solstice</a>... 4-patches! When strip pieced, these little units go together super quickly. Bonnie used orange and green for hers, but my color scheme is different. I used red in place of orange, and light blue in place of green.<br />
<br />
Here are my strips all cut out and ready to go:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnHq5QC9e4lpJNJMFgNnPZX2q6PcRJSfv9QitzlVHvPxEl6GyjpzPf_CR0I7_Mt2O_QOGd3E1VZe5fI5Twj5roWwGJm6PzwiwZbXDGcF4DmbKzCuipx4rNtriPEXhpE_4zRFNFYIAZbpUh/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnHq5QC9e4lpJNJMFgNnPZX2q6PcRJSfv9QitzlVHvPxEl6GyjpzPf_CR0I7_Mt2O_QOGd3E1VZe5fI5Twj5roWwGJm6PzwiwZbXDGcF4DmbKzCuipx4rNtriPEXhpE_4zRFNFYIAZbpUh/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought yardage in a few different prints in order to make this quilt. I didn't have much in the way of scraps in the right colors, so this is what I call "planned scrappy"... where I have to buy a little of a few different fabrics to get the feel of a scrappy quilt LOL.<br />
<br />
I'm working with 6 reds and 5 light blues at this point (though I used up one of them in this clue, I only have 4 left now). Since I don't have many prints, I have to do what I can in order to get as many combinations of fabrics as possible, so it looks more scrappy.<br />
<br />
To speed up piecing, I paired up all the strips of one blue and all the strips of one red together, and sewed them together. Before pressing, I folded them in half (using the shorter of the two strips to measure this) and placed my ruler on top of the fold:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCskHEJr1QleXpXlPmTaZzqoLG8G03Uq92-yPr1cqGdLNZBxJyPYKUMxYOOmpMHS181-14CB6FHsnsjonHhy2dCnXRhW0UmSYKfJPk1WN_0ExIj3Uqhh9StAdrIwCkrw0LsF_BYj7uy4h2/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCskHEJr1QleXpXlPmTaZzqoLG8G03Uq92-yPr1cqGdLNZBxJyPYKUMxYOOmpMHS181-14CB6FHsnsjonHhy2dCnXRhW0UmSYKfJPk1WN_0ExIj3Uqhh9StAdrIwCkrw0LsF_BYj7uy4h2/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I used the heel of my hand to press down on the ruler, making a crease in the fabric:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx15g5RY1ry_n6PN9nnj6GRlLYo8-F7tr4c3K1eU0LrwVZymeRU47WWVGfIBN8IK5XeFMww1tcGFSvXTOKIFKMKUjI-5dJrCHKJ_AxIqdgF8dBZLeK9_yrWbPN2tdp0ibAYgi9o-g9xxz-/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx15g5RY1ry_n6PN9nnj6GRlLYo8-F7tr4c3K1eU0LrwVZymeRU47WWVGfIBN8IK5XeFMww1tcGFSvXTOKIFKMKUjI-5dJrCHKJ_AxIqdgF8dBZLeK9_yrWbPN2tdp0ibAYgi9o-g9xxz-/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the fabrics were creased, I removed the ruler and laid the strips flat. Do you see the creases?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-nyYf34D1REabQjB_4qv-Eo3wCXEBdtdBvlzBUlZKLnjHd_XsilxYGwlow_eeeqS9fvl90VsKs_vbxehZzq1Jfz5ZtQ1gQb33_EoAw6E37zECp8RpwacX4mcb10nj3LEDlfWzAZ44-OdW/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-nyYf34D1REabQjB_4qv-Eo3wCXEBdtdBvlzBUlZKLnjHd_XsilxYGwlow_eeeqS9fvl90VsKs_vbxehZzq1Jfz5ZtQ1gQb33_EoAw6E37zECp8RpwacX4mcb10nj3LEDlfWzAZ44-OdW/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue4_Photo4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I lined up the creases of about 3 strip sets along one line on my cutting mat, then cut each strip in half along that crease. This gave me twice as many strip sets to mix and match, which allowed me to get a greater variety of fabric combinations for my 4-patch units.<br />
<br />
If you're behind on the clues, don't despair. This clue really does go together quickly so it won't take much to get caught up. Happy sewing!<br />

For the small quilt we need to make "only" 200 HST (half-square triangle) units. Half were turned into pinwheels while the other half are left as is, for use later in the process.<br />
<br />
First, I had to cut out 200 pieces in each of my two colors. Bonnie's pattern called for yellow and orange, but I'm using a different color scheme. In place of yellow I'm using grey, and in place of orange I'm using red. Here are my pieces, cut out and waiting to be sewn together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsxoX-OC75Ie8uOyGm52PZWZjejNZ9BPRRze0HBcowLFnMEfe-mlnt8ECE2DSGpGfN6Pa3DX2bjww3_eNCz8gOHgHO6VyGVnP0Tc05-H5DOxLjHpa012wIiuOybg3kyFcsrg7e0ynIYMy4/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsxoX-OC75Ie8uOyGm52PZWZjejNZ9BPRRze0HBcowLFnMEfe-mlnt8ECE2DSGpGfN6Pa3DX2bjww3_eNCz8gOHgHO6VyGVnP0Tc05-H5DOxLjHpa012wIiuOybg3kyFcsrg7e0ynIYMy4/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I used the top rows of red and grey for the pinwheels, and the bottom rows of red and grey for the standalone HST units.<br />
<br />
Here are the HST units made from the top rows, lined up and ready to be sewn into pinwheels. Each column will combine into 5 pinwheels.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4CvMWtMsbRj-7seRM8PX6HP9vMuaOTieYhKWgX8BJSfKcqKihdEhRQY-ZJG_A0K1NcZfYeLnqdIaZ7Ym-J4Ju4k1e5siVvKLkOxExSpTkf1Xz1EDAG30GKlFcjV8eW0u7pUgQcdWk_ZUi/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4CvMWtMsbRj-7seRM8PX6HP9vMuaOTieYhKWgX8BJSfKcqKihdEhRQY-ZJG_A0K1NcZfYeLnqdIaZ7Ym-J4Ju4k1e5siVvKLkOxExSpTkf1Xz1EDAG30GKlFcjV8eW0u7pUgQcdWk_ZUi/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't have a ton of variety in greys at this point, I used up all the smaller scraps in the last Clue. I've got yardage in 5 grey prints to work with from now on.<br />
<br />
And here you go, all the pinwheels and other HST units, finished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinwd6DcQFomdz8Zr8X8egrOq_bC7tFhZtMQqybSVzVOl0Bmv4hCZvk5178eeYfFaK9nHDUgrsaj9t92L2ivORJtFrAgQMybKx3RLSxO94zJASj_AaVXJQpqZcTavPRk-zy2ZVKdh5H2M5m/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinwd6DcQFomdz8Zr8X8egrOq_bC7tFhZtMQqybSVzVOl0Bmv4hCZvk5178eeYfFaK9nHDUgrsaj9t92L2ivORJtFrAgQMybKx3RLSxO94zJASj_AaVXJQpqZcTavPRk-zy2ZVKdh5H2M5m/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue3Img3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a strange feeling, to be done with a clue so quickly. I guess this means I should work on my other projects while waiting for next Friday LOL.<br />

My color scheme is different from Bonnie's, I used light blue in place of her green, and grey in place of her yellow. (You can see my entire color scheme <a href="http://valeriespatchwork.blogspot.com/2013/10/making-celtic-solstice-intro.html" target="_blank">earlier on my blog</a> if you're interested.)<br />
<br />
My fabrics, cut and ready to be sewn:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiundoiu8ItGi2oHDT1KO967za_9vrNCQfOATgOHM8FsCRui_WesD-tdutn2uRJfCfDoFFPuTvXpLhBB1HGshwGfZ-A57ZqpZHMCzmTF_xBy3rxoTXC_ZIU-i3lOZFowAcaX0ixgPTBzw3i/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue2FabricCut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiundoiu8ItGi2oHDT1KO967za_9vrNCQfOATgOHM8FsCRui_WesD-tdutn2uRJfCfDoFFPuTvXpLhBB1HGshwGfZ-A57ZqpZHMCzmTF_xBy3rxoTXC_ZIU-i3lOZFowAcaX0ixgPTBzw3i/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue2FabricCut.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Do you notice that grey with the black texture in front of the right-most pile of grey squares? I bought that specifically to use with Bonnie's last mystery, Easy Street. See below:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7vWc7CAFX1ZevlDZIXalEWEHvH5ejlV6wj6DxLsY1C_sC9M-B5BOHWypUS8U9v3ZxPgnVDMzouqqLBUg-7wNLq2doCfAJw3aw240vdzDR9ujBFl0ustvfsSfPoN8GvEhXN9mtuZtTCw1z/s1600/EasyStreet_Clue1_Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7vWc7CAFX1ZevlDZIXalEWEHvH5ejlV6wj6DxLsY1C_sC9M-B5BOHWypUS8U9v3ZxPgnVDMzouqqLBUg-7wNLq2doCfAJw3aw240vdzDR9ujBFl0ustvfsSfPoN8GvEhXN9mtuZtTCw1z/s400/EasyStreet_Clue1_Finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's a good grey print, very versatile for a lot of different projects. Since I have a lot left over, I thought it would be appropriate to use it in this mystery as well. It fits right in with my color scheme!<br />
<br />
Here you go, my chevrons all sewn up and ready to be put in their place in the quilt:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuMsfRLXTqogD8G55KwIllJcArPLYlyDB3se48HLQitIuOEt4w0NsN9FxO91vsHw11qBib3hAbfO6RxbkXmnrCZeZFtQ4_5jG0mtNe6uAvWcu8Tqeoqb0vWwW1ieOEFt6WWX4U4CV7twc/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue2Finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuMsfRLXTqogD8G55KwIllJcArPLYlyDB3se48HLQitIuOEt4w0NsN9FxO91vsHw11qBib3hAbfO6RxbkXmnrCZeZFtQ4_5jG0mtNe6uAvWcu8Tqeoqb0vWwW1ieOEFt6WWX4U4CV7twc/s400/CelticSolstice_Clue2Finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I am really liking this color scheme, the light blue with the grey. I may have to plan another quilt in this color scheme, I like it so much. At this rate, my list of "to do" quilts will never end LOL!<br />
<br />

<br />
First of all, I want to give a big THANK YOU to Bonnie Hunter for providing these fun mystery quilts every year, in addition to all the fantastic free patterns she has on her website. She gives so much of herself to the quilting community, and I am very thankful for it and the way she draws together quilters from all over the world to share in this hobby we all love so much. :)<br />
<br />
OK, back to our regularly scheduled program...<br />
<br />
After nearly a month of (not quite) patient waiting, Bonnie posted Part 1 of the <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/celtic-solstice-mystery.html" target="_blank">Celtic Solstice</a> Mystery. I'm making the smaller version of this quilt... and you have to remember that "small" is all relative when it comes to Bonnie's quilts LOL. The small one will finish at 75" x 75", which can either be left as is or easily be expanded with borders to make a good size Queen quilt.<br />
<br />
So, the first step was to make a total of 188 units using the Tri-Recs rulers. Here you see I have all my pieces cut out, using red instead of her orange:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPnvdb1ATuHkmheMmbB_Y2M8xnrqDkfzcPKJQDLIoLBlUOyH_wlC3wU_ilStXP4B3CAsseh7gGUgvd6Lu1dim31xSAhe4IGfKWQ0xSynZVi6sxK1Mt_CxGpaGbTyh-g4hEdvSCoOPsiute/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue1_Photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPnvdb1ATuHkmheMmbB_Y2M8xnrqDkfzcPKJQDLIoLBlUOyH_wlC3wU_ilStXP4B3CAsseh7gGUgvd6Lu1dim31xSAhe4IGfKWQ0xSynZVi6sxK1Mt_CxGpaGbTyh-g4hEdvSCoOPsiute/s640/CelticSolstice_Clue1_Photo1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And after two days I finally got them all sewn!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH8LHBNg1OW3QuLAnBsfc_72WdR9zXUEvy13vtr8pshglwkbO2EGbnsuGYUwTVBdoekR0EYqCapf0jl1etRQTn-N5Sw7szQcYbJVVrUFYSRc0lTJKCY6KAIm1lit6hz-MBC0MF5kbRakxp/s1600/CelticSolstice_Clue1_Photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH8LHBNg1OW3QuLAnBsfc_72WdR9zXUEvy13vtr8pshglwkbO2EGbnsuGYUwTVBdoekR0EYqCapf0jl1etRQTn-N5Sw7szQcYbJVVrUFYSRc0lTJKCY6KAIm1lit6hz-MBC0MF5kbRakxp/s640/CelticSolstice_Clue1_Photo2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Yippee! I'm so glad I got these units finished, and I eagerly look forward to Part 2, which will be out later this week.<br />
<br />
So, what will keep me busy in the mean time? Plenty! Errands to run and monthly financials to do on Monday, new tires on the car on Tuesday, possibly Jury Duty on Thursday, and Christmas projects to fill in the gaps between the other obligations. Speaking of which, it's time to get off the computer and get back to those Christmas projects. :)<br />
<br />
Happy sewing, everyone!<br />
<br />

On October 23rd, she posted the <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/celtic-solstice-mystery.html" target="_blank">Intro</a> to the mystery including her color choices: Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue. You can see the color cards she picked here:<br /><br /><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Tku3ylwiRrQ/UmdMulv6jlI/AAAAAAABY5U/PJOD9mKrUJA/s1600-h/CelticSolstice%252520009%25255B3%25255D.jpg" target="_blank">Bonnie's Color Cards</a><br />
<br />
I'm not really that keen on her colors this year, unlike last year's quilt with amethyst, lime green, teal, and white/black. So I've decided to go a different direction with my colors. And for inspiration, being a car enthusiast as well as a quilter, I decided to take my color cues from BMW's Motorsport division. Yes, I chose the "M" colors:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIE5i-IwmcBWRqPNhDXYZi3Z4gThA5N_RnYGjoeXD5h2P0pDDou8cHbK3OwhJsbOviiU3e3VEEynxHCu3M1YTW-tL4pQ8YIYBQz1JFrXpo3GJNG0GwTF5WoWPpULtO500Wu8i0Jci4dQIE/s1600/Bmw_M_logo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIE5i-IwmcBWRqPNhDXYZi3Z4gThA5N_RnYGjoeXD5h2P0pDDou8cHbK3OwhJsbOviiU3e3VEEynxHCu3M1YTW-tL4pQ8YIYBQz1JFrXpo3GJNG0GwTF5WoWPpULtO500Wu8i0Jci4dQIE/s320/Bmw_M_logo.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I think this color combination is very handsome, don't you? Here's how I'm going to arrange my colors in relation to Bonnie's colors...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje0UQZJKNKm7T18er5JsEl_QbMrpiYBOTn7STC6L3ulMPf97uOaUUdZpGPFOpyW6ZS9t6iGiIraQJEyUMKl_nB56JpN8wXX5Eo0JNHTb-UmMpn0ySgB5h0_eb-igt1i733zH6kD-5r3q80/s1600/CelticSolstice_Blues.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje0UQZJKNKm7T18er5JsEl_QbMrpiYBOTn7STC6L3ulMPf97uOaUUdZpGPFOpyW6ZS9t6iGiIraQJEyUMKl_nB56JpN8wXX5Eo0JNHTb-UmMpn0ySgB5h0_eb-igt1i733zH6kD-5r3q80/s320/CelticSolstice_Blues.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'll use Dark Blue where Bonnie currently has her blues.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOMNOn1CvlG2-WMdt3oP90V0Ff1uIhgpnMrI7V1uMYymg2DZ36l-_U5NTp3yMLF9G9gyxZlrT8zGminjQzy8Ad0pfL-drlQQpNec1ZxKE1KFlYkzlIipfPpi8HsJWO_5EZo42rtZAyKR2J/s1600/CelticSolstice_LtBlues.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOMNOn1CvlG2-WMdt3oP90V0Ff1uIhgpnMrI7V1uMYymg2DZ36l-_U5NTp3yMLF9G9gyxZlrT8zGminjQzy8Ad0pfL-drlQQpNec1ZxKE1KFlYkzlIipfPpi8HsJWO_5EZo42rtZAyKR2J/s320/CelticSolstice_LtBlues.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'll use Light Blue where Bonnie will use green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWGPTx35mLJg6BkC9iezVwj5bvW4HP2-0T3ux5SyTf-ehn53Y7jlAOeuC0i8L3ctmWDrkg6sokZ5w8l1jraH0ezfgxpJXkTlW0sQkgJQNz1cM-d9PIMJCql8ZV-hwxuVKqQRWR5mcPbCEN/s1600/CelticSolstice_Reds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWGPTx35mLJg6BkC9iezVwj5bvW4HP2-0T3ux5SyTf-ehn53Y7jlAOeuC0i8L3ctmWDrkg6sokZ5w8l1jraH0ezfgxpJXkTlW0sQkgJQNz1cM-d9PIMJCql8ZV-hwxuVKqQRWR5mcPbCEN/s320/CelticSolstice_Reds.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'll use Red where Bonnie will use orange.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2lCY00658a6-tSAq0t-aE3vaHyCkicVYsRZXcUAGKm2zQjRUrbn9zNDpQ-SWiGzijbZzJeV8ngorm27vZ5yEo3pGRxzDDyW9sgAzkLl603ES8JXu_DxrfmF1MawrXXf6RZiz4FJbeQfeO/s1600/CelticSolstice_Greys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2lCY00658a6-tSAq0t-aE3vaHyCkicVYsRZXcUAGKm2zQjRUrbn9zNDpQ-SWiGzijbZzJeV8ngorm27vZ5yEo3pGRxzDDyW9sgAzkLl603ES8JXu_DxrfmF1MawrXXf6RZiz4FJbeQfeO/s320/CelticSolstice_Greys.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And I'll use Grey where Bonnie will use yellow.<br />
<br />
I will still use white or very light cream neutrals, just as Bonnie will be with her color scheme. But I want to keep this quilt crisp so I'll try to go through my whites before I touch any of my creams.<br />
<br />
So, what about you? Are you going to play along? What colors will you use? Which size will you make? Bonnie will be providing directions for two sizes this time... Big and Bigger LOL. I'm going to do the smaller of the two, since I've made several king size quilts in the last year I've decided I don't like making them that big. :)<br />
<br />
Until next time....<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBliLVPh4XB-N1EIZDsA0dqgcKGnZDWimfDXW39A8xffBjlJA1SvvebZGO33pBILGBAiP1279enC9iYIxupdIhbGKw6myIAyeG8p3JE96rMLUxDkwBDVpRMRsL_3lb3pPLHrfoOo6K7jc_/s1600/TwistedMystery9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBliLVPh4XB-N1EIZDsA0dqgcKGnZDWimfDXW39A8xffBjlJA1SvvebZGO33pBILGBAiP1279enC9iYIxupdIhbGKw6myIAyeG8p3JE96rMLUxDkwBDVpRMRsL_3lb3pPLHrfoOo6K7jc_/s400/TwistedMystery9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a quilt I made for a swap. I received fabrics from my swap partner, who mentioned she wanted a lap quilt with an ocean or beach theme to give as a retirement gift to a coworker. This is what I came up with. The outer border is a Disappearing 4-Patch, which gives it movement such as water rippling in tide pools. The applique was just a lot of fun to add to the quilt, too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0p2lbc7Wc5lM2UmCy8dAdhyphenhyphenJy5czJjTtsRZaG4JINPgnUDLCaD2CWBt9qe1sC5ygqWKZ3CuXjWZ88tZEKrNHYg7gaFgWiVXjm9HifWsPM98J-V-qUj8XI2L4qXgYOn1yDyUxc_3k4xaOE/s1600/JoAnnesQuilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0p2lbc7Wc5lM2UmCy8dAdhyphenhyphenJy5czJjTtsRZaG4JINPgnUDLCaD2CWBt9qe1sC5ygqWKZ3CuXjWZ88tZEKrNHYg7gaFgWiVXjm9HifWsPM98J-V-qUj8XI2L4qXgYOn1yDyUxc_3k4xaOE/s400/JoAnnesQuilt.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this quilt for a friend. I'm not sure if she was trying to stump me when she said her favorite colors were pink, purple, teal, and BLACK. But I found the perfect pattern, and this quilt was born. She LOVES it, and that makes me really happy. :)<br />

A client fell in love with this quilt, which came as a kit that she bought. But she's not a quilter! So she hired me to put it together for her, and it turned out so super cute!<br />

I loved the teacup pattern so much, I made another one for a friend using fabric from my stash.<br />

Today, I'll be binding this behemoth. It's a King size t-shirt quilt, made from my client's running t-shirts he's been collecting since around 1982. It turned out beautifully, and I can't wait to finish it and return it to him. :)<br />
<br />
Oh, and have you seen? Bonnie Hunter's new mystery is under way. She posted the first clue with colors and yardage, you can see it here:<br />

I'm debating doing it. If I do, I think I'll choose a different colorway. This one just isn't speaking to me like last year's did. Oh, and the great thing is she's offering it in two sizes! Big and Bigger LOL. Will you be participating this year?<br />
